As an individual embarks on their leadership journey they are committing not only to themselves but to others that they want to make a difference. They commit to lifelong learning, to continuous improvement, and to empowering others to be the best version of themselves. Leadership isn’t about position, it has nothing to do with titles, and it definitely isn’t management. Leadership is being able to inspire and motivate others to act towards achieving a common goal. Leading in the 21st Century is proving nothing less than a feat only for the brave. Life is full of complexities, high stress situations, and continuous demand. We are well transitioned into the Information Age now and as we experience and hear every day, this comes with unimaginable consequences. Global issues are multifaceted and complex in nature, countries are experiencing severe economic downturn, communities are plagued with mental health issues, and families are facing challenges that are altogether different in landscape. Citizens in today’s world are absorbed with a sense of fear of what the future will hold. Waking everyday wondering if they will be next to lose their job, is my child being bullied, is my child a bully? Will the mortgage get paid on time or am I good enough? We are overwhelmed with thoughts of the unknown and this leads me to believe there is no better time than now for sound leadership. Developing or growing leadership skills is something everyone can practice. Yes, some skills and competencies will come naturally while others will push you right to the edge of your comfort zone. However, it is in this space, in the space of ambiguity that leaders thrive. In the unknown, leaders are able to step up create an innovative vision and confidently communicate it out, while finding ways to motivate those around them. The vision a leader creates is one that is far greater than themselves. Leaders will look for ways to synergize with others, they seek out collaboration and collective ways to ensure the greatest impact. Leaders find motivation by opening their hearts and minds to new possibilities, new ways of thinking and different alternatives. Sound leadership in all aspects of life, family, friends, work and community will certainly help create a happy and healthy society. A leader who can instill faith and inspiration in their followers will create a better frame of mind for all. The Leadership Wood Buffalo program helps build personal leadership capacity in areas such as: confidence, resiliency and strength. The program is uniquely designed to assist participants to understand and leverage their leadership impact in the community, to develop and nurture peer networks, while increasing individual capacity and understanding of how to lead through dynamic change and complexity. Leadership Wood Buffalo is getting ready to kick off the 2018-2019 cohort recruitment process.
